J. Hershey Architecture specializes in home additions and renovations. Projects include new master suites, kitchen renovations, finished basements, room additions, and overall renovations including changing the exterior appearance of your home. It is the collaboration with our clients and the ability to provide a desirable solution to meet their needs that excites us. Our service includes all aspects from site analysis through design and ultimately assistance during construction. Our focus with renovation projects is to provide a design that seamlessly blends with the existing home. This can be accomplished very simply or when necessary with a complete facelift to transform the overall appearance to create your dream home.
The home featured to the left is located in a quaint neighborhood with a mix of one and two-story residences. It was the client’s goal to add significant space for their family with an appearance that fit the context of the neighborhood, and do this with specific budget constraints.

"The phrase “you get what you pay for” has significant meaning when selecting an architect. My wife and I have dealt with three different architects on two different projects. John Hershey’s performance stands out clearly as the best of the three. On our last project we had been working for about a year with two different architects to remodel our 1000sqft ranch house, into a two story, four bedroom home that would better fit our family of 6. The major problems were lot size, and having a plan that did not necessitate a complete tear down. None of the plans we were getting were solving all our problems. We brought John in on the project and things changed for the better immediately. The very first draft of John’s plan not only solved all of our current problems but also had some innovative ideas that gave us MORE floor space than we had hoped for. By the final draft John had given us a house plan that anticipated and exceeded all our needs. We were very happy! His service to us did not end here. He helped us select a builder. Then, and most importantly, John was available to us during all phases of construction. On the few occasions when changes had to be made, John would show up on-site to give his recommendations. No detail was too small for his attention. Thanks to John we ended up with a house we really love, in a great neighborhood and for a price that stayed within our budget! If ever I need architectural services again John will be my first choice."
I am writing this letter in recognition of the fine work performed by John Hershey and representatives of J. Hershey Architecture as it relates to the design work and variance approvals which were subsequently approved for our new home in Libertyville. John and his staff have done an excellent job during the design phase to understand our needs and vision for our new home. John has also done an excellent job to help us understand options and implications with various choices so that we would be assured a new home that we could grow into and which we would not have second thoughts on in the future.
When I approached the village they would not support a variance. Originally we felt we would seek the variance on our own but the more we thought about it we just did not have the time, experience or comfort to attend to such an issue properly. John presented our case in a very easy to understand format with excellent coverage to any objections that could come up. The village actually made specific favorable comments to how our case was presented. The variance was granted on the first try with four of four positive votes.
In summary we have been very satisfied with J. Hershey Architecture.
